With extensive support throughout Oregon, Washington, and Kentucky, we’re just beginning to build momentum on the wave of information and education we aim to spread throughout the United States. WHEREAS, Approximately 1 in 8 women in the United States will develop breast cancer within her lifetime; and
WHEREAS, Breast surgery for treatment of cancer often results in disfigurement that has a significant impact on a woman’s self-esteem and well-being; and
WHEREAS, Restoring a breast is an integral part of breast cancer treatment that is of paramount importance in a woman’s recovery; and
WHEREAS, Under the Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act (WHCRA) of 1998, group health plans, insurance companies and health maintenance organizations (HMOs) must provide coverage for reconstructive services relating to the mastectomy; and
WHEREAS, Most members of the medical community and community at large advocate that all women with a new diagnosis of breast cancer deserve to know that these rights exist so that they can make educated and thoughtful decisions regarding treatment options; and
WHEREAS, Preparing a comprehensive breast treatment plan prior to implementing any treatment modalities has an impact on the overall well being of a patient, and
WHEREAS, In an effort to raise awareness of these rights, the state of Oregon joins in the celebration of the annual “Breast Restoration AdVocacy Education” Day-“BRAVE Day”.
